Most of you know Outback Sheepskins from one or more of our temporary mall locations around the country that we operate during the Christmas season. Well, we have had so many of our valuable customers request that we design a website so that they can buy our wonderful products year round, that we just had to do it!

Although you may be familiar with our great sheepskin products, you may not be familiar with the history of Outback Sheepskins, so please allow us to tell you about us...

The founder and owner of Outback Sheepskins is John Herod. Raised in New Zealand, John enjoyed the peaceful serenity and breathtaking scenery of one of the most beautiful countries in the world, along with thousands and thousands of (you guessed it) SHEEP! John and his family discovered the wonderful comfort, durability and popularity of natural sheepskin products and eventually moved to Australia to carry on the tradition. Later, John met the woman of his dreams, fell in love, and moved to the United States to marry his lovely wife Nancy.

In 1980, we opened our first retail store in Virginia Beach, VA and then our first temporary kiosk location in 1983. In 1989, we sold our temporary tenant program to further develop the manufacturing and wholesale side of our business, while continuing to supply several companies who specialized in operating temporary mall locations, such as Bighorn Sheepskin and Denver Buffalo. Then, in 1997, we launched our Outback Sheepskins concept with 14 stores nation-wide. Since then, we have continued to develop and define our program to meet the demands of today’s changing marketplace. We have designed our own specialty kiosk to fit in with our Australian Outback concept, which has been very well received by both malls and consumers alike. Our inline program designs have also met with similar success, due to our ability to adapt our fixturing and concept to achieve a unique and professional look.

Outback Sheepskins uses only hand-selected Australian Merino sheepskins that are tanned and manufactured to our specifications. We are the only U.S. sheepskin company that has its own office in China and that tans and manufactures all its own products. Our entire product line is designed internally and we control everything from the purchase of raw skins in Australia to the finished kiosk design.
